‘Purple Hayes’ natural gas well in Ohio was completed having a lateral of 18,544 feet!

Eclipse Resources drilled the Utica play well, which is thought to be the longest horizontal onshore lateral gas well in the United States and also the longest lateral achieved via a hydraulic snubbing rig in the Appalachian basin.

“The entire DWS team is extremely proud to have played a pivotal role in completing this very special industry accomplishment,” said Mark Marmo, President/CEO of Deep Well Services.

Deep Well Services’ involvement in the pre-job planning occurred six months before mobilizing to the Purple Hayes pad and enabled the Zelienople-based company to recognize a number of obstacles and challenges the project would entail.

Through modeling and rotary technology upgrades, the DWS team re-designed its 285K standalone unit to overcome hurdles the team expected to encounter while attempting to achieve total depth (TD) on the record-breaking well.

DWS partnered with Consolidated Rig Works, LLC (CRW), an industry-leading custom oilfield equipment manufacturer in Fort Worth, Texas, to enhance its rotary capabilities. The DWS and CRW teams developed a much more robust table, converting the equipment from a two-motor, 6,600 foot/pounds system to a fully functional four-motor, 10,000 foot/pounds hydraulic gallery rotary with capabilities of producing up to 120 RPM. This rotary upgrade as well as the unit’s ability to pull 285,000 pounds and push up to 142,000 pounds was instrumental in achieving Plug Back Total Depth (PBTD) at 26,868 feet.

In addition to achieving TD, the project’s timeline also was critical. DWS’ technical snubbing team and highly trained crews milled out 123 Frac plugs in only 10 days with no incidents or downtime. The timeline included not just true milling plug times, but also the time necessary to perform bottoms up circulations, sweeps to the heel, a bit trip, and pulling back up to the heavy drill string crossover to enable crews to add lighter weight tubing. Adding the lighter weight drill string eliminated many of the downhole friction and torque issues as the rig progressed further into the lateral. The new integrated equipment designs and the efficiencies of a four-post quick jack enabled the well to be completely milled out in a very impressive timeframe all within the safe working capabilities of the rig.

DWS finished the Purple Hayes project days in advance of Eclipse’s anticipated completion date, which led to a substantial savings of capital in the completion authority for expenditure (AFE) budget. This enabled Eclipse to have its record-breaking well online sooner than originally projected.

“Deep Well Services did a great job as always,” said Oleg Tolmachev, Senior Vice President of Drilling and Completion of Eclipse Resources.

“Deep Well Services’ equipment and crews performed flawlessly during the drill out phase on the Purple Hayes 1H. They continue to outperform expectations and have implemented industry leading training and technology to achieve success in laterals of these depths. The success of this project can be attributed to the forward planning and rig modifications made by the team at Deep Well Services,” said Kyle Bradford, Completions Manager for Eclipse Resources.
